” The “Blackout” model is the most coveted and collectible of all the Ref:14270 variants as the watch was produced in very low numbers and this dial variation was only found on E and X serial numbers. This particular example is an E serial and from 1990 “
– Paul Maudsley
For around one year only the black enamel-filled 3-6-9 hour markers were found and all seem to have serial numbers corresponding to production years of 1990 and 1991.
The earliest dials such and this, have printing stamped in silver and thus giving a metallic effect. As Rolex transitioned into the X serial watches, the silver-print dials were replaced with white-print dials but still with applied blacked-out 3-6-9 indices.
Some of the earliest E series silver-print 14270 “Blackouts” have a special seconds hand with the lume dot further out than standard production models, again found on this example Im offering. Rolex stopped production of the special seconds hands and switched to the normal Ref:14270 seconds hands with the lume dot in its normal location.
These early watches with rare nuances like this are the watches to own from this period of transition for Rolex. This watch is with its correct period 78360 bracelet with 558B end links, fitted Rolex box and booklets (no papers) and is in fantastic condition and ready to be worn.
